Splashing through San Marco

Venice was just lovely. We watched the sun set over San Marco as we drank and listened to the battle of the orchestras. We ate at delicious sketchy places. Our bed and breakfast overlooked an adorable canal. We slept with the windows open to listen to the gondoliers singing and playing music.
So yesterday morning we opened the front door of our building and the steps led straight into the canal. The whole city had flooded!! I was so surprised! All I could manage was, "Mom, we can't get out!" Our wonderful B&B host chased us down and equipped us with big umbrellas and goofy old boots of various colors and sizes. So we waded down our street and into San Marco. It was so much fun! While everyone else was being ushered down makeshift gangways by highly unamused policemen, we were wading through dead pigeons and window shopping at flooded stores. Even Gucci was flooded. I bought gelato from one of the few stores that were open. It sure was a cultural experience. We had the whole square to ourselves. We were in so many people's photos I started waving and posing a little.
Now we are in Zurich and I'M GOING HOME TOMORROW!!! It's sad, but I'm pretty tired. And I want to see my family and hug my cats and hear the latest J-town gossip and eat a proper hamburger.
